Snow Flower and The Secret Fan will always be a special book for me. It is something I have told many about and have passed my copy on to so many friends. The movie wasn't as good as the book (my book review is here) but that is expected when a book movies you as much as this did. My DVD review is here.
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See, is the story of Lily, her "Same" and an ancient language (nu shu – "women's writing") kept a secret for a thousand years forms the backdrop for an unforgettable novel of two Chinese women whose friendship and love sustains them through their lives. Certain girls are paired as "old-sames" in emotional matches that last throughout their lives. They paint letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their windows to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments.
