Summer Read Giveaway - Do-Over by Robin Hemley

What do you get when a 48 year old dad decides to re-do parts of his childhood? You get Do-Over by Robin Hemley!
  • What if you could do things differently?
  • What if you could record over some of the worst, most traumatizing moments that have shaped the person you are today? Would you?
Well, in Do-Over we find out what happens when Robin Hemley decides to re-live or, do a re-take the moments that affected him as a child.

Robin makes his do-over list, which includes Kindergarten (his teacher was a crazy psycho who stepped on kids during nap time). The School Play (he blew his one line and ruined the play). Summer Camp (picked last for everything). Sixth Grade (he was bullied), Senior Prom (no date), and more.

The concept is great. I would love to do over tons of moments especially surrounding my elementary years. My son is going to kindergarten soon, so I loved reading from an insiders prospective how much fun kindergarten is. How we are all made to feel that being different is "great" and how you get snack, lunch, recess, snack and nap time. I want to go back to Kindergarten.

Could you put your life on hold and redo some of your life shaping moments? I know I couldn't, but I would love to go back to school and be a better student.

I love Robin's 8th grade do-over. He has art class and gets to do paper-mache "hello paper-mache my old friend! How I've missed you all these years." He also asks his wife to fill out a parent/guardian worksheet but she feels too nauseous, "it's too Freudian having my pregnant wife fill out my parent/guardian worksheet. It seemed like a good idea for a millisecond."

In A Nutshell: Robin's story is witty, interesting, eye opening, funny, extremely humble and very courageous. Do-Over is a great read. I love how he interacts with his classmates and how easy it is for his classmates to accept that this 48 year old man walking into their class or cabin (at camp) should be treated just like them. Proving how accepting kids can be. A great summer read!
